4 tips for staying safe on your holiday road trip

You may be among the many Washington residents who are planning to hit the road this holiday season to visit family and friends or to just take a holiday trip. Road trips are common this time of year, and with so many people on the road and in a hurry to get to their destinations, it is important to keep safety a top priority.

You certainly do not want anything to ruin your holiday season, especially a car accident. Unfortunately, if you are on the road, you are at risk of being involved in an accident. Of course, you can always do your part to reduce the chances of causing a crash.

How can you be a safe holiday driver?

Many of the safety tips that you and other drivers can utilize during the holidays can apply at any time of the year. Before you get behind the wheel and after you hit the road, you may want to keep these tips in mind:

  • Follow the speed limit. It may seem like everyone on the road is in a hurry to get to their destinations, but if you speed, you increase your chances of a crash.
  • Avoid distracted driving. If you have passengers in your vehicle, make sure they are not being too rambunctious, and allow them to check your phone, GPS or other devices you may need while you drive so that you can keep your eyes and mind on the road.
  • Get enough rest the night before. Many people start their holiday road trips early in the morning in hopes of beating traffic, but you still need to make sure that you get enough rest before driving to avoid drowsiness and fatigue, which could quickly contribute to an accident.
  • Plan ahead. Make sure that you have the car packed correctly and that your vehicle is in proper working order before you start your trip, to avoid last-minute issues.

Taking a trip any time of the year can be exciting, especially when you are going to visit loved ones. However, it is important to remember that everyone on the road wants to get to their destinations as safely as possible. By remaining a defensive and conscientious driver, you may be able to avoid a serious accident this holiday season. Of course, you may want to keep in mind that you do have legal options if another person causes a crash that leaves you injured.
