Increased rate of fatal pedestrian crashes in Washington

Winter weather can make for a beautiful holiday season, but it can also create hazardous road conditions. For residents and travelers in Washington and other states in the north, snow can create slick driving conditions. This is why drivers are urged to reduce their speeds and drive with caution; however, some motorists fail to do so.

The negligence of a speeding or reckless driver could be the cause of a serious or fatal crash. Additionally, it is not just other vehicles that could be struck but cyclists and motorists traveling near the roadway as well.

According to current statistics, the overall rate of traffic fatalities has gone down in the state of Washington; however, the rate of pedestrian and cyclist fatalities in the state have increases. While it is noted that traffic-related crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists have increased, the greatest concern is that these victims are dying at a higher rate.

While there is no exact cause for the increased rate in fatalities in these types of crash, there are some speculations. Evidence and information from pedestrian and cyclist crashes in the state suggest that the fatality rate has shot up because of the increased use of SUVs and pickup trucks on the roadways. While the drivers of these vehicles are not necessarily the issue, it is the size and structure of these vehicles that make them deadly to pedestrians.

Nonetheless, in the event of a pedestrian or cyclist crash, it is important to understand cause and liability. A negligent driver could be held liable for the damages and harms caused in a serious or fatal crash.

The aftermath of a pedestrian crash can be gruesome and tragic. Oftentimes, victims of a pedestrian crash suffer severe injuries or even death. Thus, it is important that victims and their loved ones fully understand their options when it comes to legal recourses. This could look like a personal injury action or a wrongful death claim. Either civil suit could help with the recovery of compensation, which then could be used to address the losses and damages caused by the crash.
